teaching . week 23

Mentoring local artist & Teaching art is my jam. Really. I have found such joy and passion for investing in young artists here in Cape Town! It's a great tool for up-skilling, but also for getting to know people, places and culture!

Lately I've been teaching one-on-one and also in large groups. Observation drawing, watercolor painting, mosaic (with paper), and group interaction projects were last week! I love the variety of projects, the simplicity of using what you find - finding beauty in the things around you. There's also something great about bringing art to people who have recently been through trauma. In all my sessions last week, once we got into the project, the students shared with me freely about recent gang violence, the death of an innocent teen, and taxi wars which put public transport users in danger. When the hands move, the mind releases. When the mind releases, the soul is ministered to!

Here's what that looked like last week:

ART MENTORING

 GROUP MANDALAS
unity, balance, togetherness, reflecting each other's beauty

COMMUNITY CHALLENGES & REMEDY ARTWORK

This exercise asked the participant to illustrate issues in their community.
They shared their story and then tore the artwork into segments showing the desire
to change and demolish the challenges. (part 1)

With the torn pieces, the group then chooses symbols to illustrate the REMEDY
or SOLUTION to the community ills. This group beautifully worked together to
create an artwork with 'helping hands, love, growth and the cross of Christ.' We had
discussions around the way to transform a community is through love, not violence, and
Jesus is the ultimate example of that. Christ is the only one who can do the hard
work in our community, and we need to join hands and depend on Him, asking for His intervention!
